Chapter 5: Ev(e).

Dana Evans glared at the glowing keypad sealing Dr. Gordon’s lab inside the Fairchild Research Center. She hated micro-circuitry, hated wearing the skin tight containment suit straight out of a teenager’s wet dream, and the custom-molded face mask itched. To make it worse, she was a hundred feet underground, and the sniffer couldn't make up its mind about the air quality.

Someone down here flipped a chicken-switch that made about a thousand people topside wet themselves, so the bio-containment protocols came down like the fist of God. The FRC staff were immediately evacuated, the power systems were valved off, and preparations were underway for a full-scale purge. Thirty years worth of research and development were skating the edge of thermal oblivion, and more than a few of the FRC scientists were a little testy about the interruption. Most of them claimed they were on the verge of massive breakthroughs in a dozen different prototype technologies, so Dana could relate: she didn't like being interrupted when she was playing solitaire, either.

It was amazing how fast everyone working here was scooped up and driven to a decontamination hub while the eggs in the data center got the 'who' and 'why' sorted out. Dana was happy enough to watch the sideshow from a lawn chair with a bag of popcorn, but someone decided they didn't want to come up for the party. Standard protocol was to make a head count, and Dr. Charles Gordon played hooky.

Dana knew the access codes had been changed remotely for her, but nobody bothered to tell her what they’d been changed to. When her fists tightened, her vinyl-coated gloves squeaked. She tried a generic ANACI login for classified civilian clearance, and then an SSBI for initial top secret access. Both codes failed. She scowled at the screen for a moment, and then typed ‘Eve’. The keypad flashed blue, and the airlock opened.

There were only two credible reasons the good doctor didn't want to come up for air when the alarms went off: The first was that his lab was the one compromised, and he couldn't walk, or he decided the Chinese government paid better. Diplomats and covert agents had been salting the FRC for years, and the powers-that-be knew they were starting to lose the battle.

The door to the lab opened onto a catwalk that hugged the walls of a rectangular room. The center of each walkway opened to a staircase that connected the observation level to the workroom. The difference was only about seven feet, but it created an encyclopedia’s worth of options for an ambush. She held her breath and listened at the edge of the doorway, but the only sound she could hear was the dull hum of the ballasts in the overhead lights.

The main power was shut down once the distress code reached the observation post on the surface, and the emergency power only came back on after Dana sent an all-clear from a battery-powered relay. She looked up and down the hall and felt a chill ripple through her; the whole place looked like the inside of an oven.
